Are you and your family going through another quarantine? You may have already come across a few tips on how to survive it. One of them was probably: meditate. However, during isolation or another lockdown, a small problem may arise—there is no suitable place at home. Fortunately, there is one moment and one part of your home where you have both. The shower. If you have time to shower, you have time to meditate.
People often say that they simply don't have the energy or time to meditate. We all shower or bathe, so you can combine the two. Your family will certainly allow you privacy in the bathroom. Close the door and the running water will muffle the sounds of the household, the endless arguments of the children will fade into the distance, and you can focus only on yourself.
And how do you meditate? Be aware of the running water. Enjoy how the water flows down from your head, how it gets through your hair to your scalp. Focus on the smell of water and soap, listen to the rhythm of the flowing water, taste it. Engage all your senses lightly. Mindfulness meditation teaches us to engage all our senses, and this works perfectly in the shower. Don't stress if you catch yourself thinking about something else. The important thing is that you catch yourself and bring your attention back to thoughts about the shower.
There is no right way to meditate, and it can look different for each individual in the shower. A good plan is to come up with your own ritual. You can combine the experience with music, take a bath, close your eyes, or listen to a meditation recording. The most common practice is to focus on your breath, its speed, rhythm, quality, and strength. The key is to decide at the beginning how your ritual will proceed and try to stick to the plan. Even if you feel that it's not working today and your thoughts are wandering elsewhere, try not to give up. After each interruption, return to what you set out to do.
Simple and short exercises will put your mind in a calmer state and help you concentrate or fall asleep more easily in the evening. And that's definitely worth it!
So, are you ready to give it a try? Try meditation in the bathroom and let us know how it goes. Don't drown!
